Midem 2013

24 January, 2013 | BM&A Actions, Exchange

The time has come! Between the 26th and 29th of January, the French city of Cannes will be home to one of the biggest and most traditional business conferences of the world: Midem 2013.

Focusing not only on the music business, but also open to discussions on internet, technology and communications, the conference gathers exhibitors from around 90 different countries, and more than 6 thousand attendees. Record labels, editors, shows, festivals, private digital companies and mobile technologies will all be represented at Cannes, aiming their efforts on closing deals, strengthening networks and meeting new talents.

Brazilian participation

Since 2003 BM&A has guaranteed the Brazilian attendance at the event. For the institution’s president, Jose Carlos Costa Netto, the conference is the most expressive one in its own segment, and has significantly helped to improve the Brazilian music business. “Midem has been a very important event in terms of spreading out the word on Brazilian music. Specially on the last decade, the event has been particularly important for gathering information on the market, and phonograms that have been produced by our independent scene – that has grown a lot during these past years”, he says.

During the 2013 edition of Midem, it is scheduled to happen at the conference, on Saturday, 26th, a series of meetings, one of them entitled “Meet the countries – Brazil”. During quick 5 minutes sittings, the attendees will have the opportunity to talk to representatives of the Brazilian music industry in person – names such as Luciana Pergorer, from ABMI; Fábio Pereira, from Veirano Advogados; Felipe Llerena, from Venture BR and Claudio Silberberg, from ST2 have confirmed their participation.

Also, John Telfer, from Basement Brazil, will participate on the scheduled “Meet the Publishers”. On Monday, 28th, Fábio Pereira, will be attending the “Meet the Lawyers” series of meetings. On the same day Deborah Sztajnberg, CEO of Debs Consultoria, will participate on the following panel: “Winning Strategies to Approach Brands & Agencies”.

At midemLab, segment dedicated to upcoming start-ups and the development of apps, our country will be represented by “o Queremos!”, project developed by journalist Bruno Natal, who will also be attending the event.

Honoring Brazil

Great expectations lean towards the 29th of January, when Midem organization will gather to announce the choice of country to be honored during the 2014 edition of the conference: Brazil! The announcement will be followed by a press conference with Costa Netto, president of BM&A, João Zílio, from Sesc/SP and Antônio Grassi, president of FUNARTE and delegate from Brazil’s official Culture Office. “The main reason of my attendance this year is, with no doubt, to straighten our paths towards conceiving midem/Brasil 2014”, says Costa Netto. Project manager David Mcloughlin and BME’s international PRs Dirk Schade e Robert Singerman will also be at Cannes, scheduling meetings and assisting companies who aim on making deals with Brazil.

Our music has already been honored by Midem, in 2003. And after this decade of gap between both editions, Costa Netto believes that our market has encountered new challenges. The biggest one being the transition to the digital era, specifically the internet, in a way that does not exclude authors, musicians, labels and editors from collecting legit payments. “This scene has been evolving gradually and Midem is, today, one of the main proponents of this discussion”, he explains.

Find out how BAFIM was – Buenos Aires Feria Internacional de la Musica

20 September, 2011 | Music Market

Between 14 and 18 September the capital of Argentina held another edition of BAFIM – Buenos Aires Feria Internacional de la Musica. After the cancellation of 2010, the fair came this year in a new format, focusing on generating business. There was no more spaces for stands, neither the shows took place inside the exhibit space. The organization focused on the event at a place called MusicNet, where producers from 20 countries marked their meetings by an online system. Brazil has had significant participation, with 60 subscribers, according to organizers of the fair, and was, after Argentina, the country with the largest presence at the event. BM&A was there.

The gigs took place in venues around the city of Buenos Aires. Brazil scored with a presence in Brazilian Night at Club Niceto on September 15. The idea came after the trip that the BM&A has made Buenos Aires in June, while MICA – Mercado de Indústrias Culturales Argentina.  Through a selection made in partnership with the organization of Niceto, Toque no Brasil and BM&A, five artists were chosen to present that night: Tiê, Tulipa Ruiz, Lucas Santtana, Do Amor and DJ Patrick Tor4.

“Well I’m suspect to talk about Tulipa Ruiz, I love her voice, her band is one of the best and the songs are pure poetry. Although short, Tulipa made a great show, as usual, “said Gustavo Benjão, from Rio de Janeiro´s band Do Amor, which came on the stage soon after. “We went on stage at a crowded Niceto (again!). The Argentine public is special, they can be perfectly polite and attentive, and at the same time extremely excited. It seems normal but is actually difficult to find. We did a show like that… 220 volts! The reception was once again very good and we see that every trip to Argentina (there are five in the history of Do Amor) people are familiar with our music and keep up our momentum switched”, said the musician.

His Do Amor partner, Gabriel Mayall – the Bubu, praised the organization of the event: “times were respected, good backline, good technical infrastructure and good tecnitians! Still not enough all the shows were broadcast on web in high-quality video legitimizing the inter-connectivity between the cities of the Mercosul and the world. We just have to thank everyone involved. “

The night also featured the partnership of Sonoamerica label – a strong promoter of Brazilian music in Argentina – and the Brazilian Embassy in Argentina. With the venue full for almost all night, the show was a great success.

BM&A prepared a digital disc that was released to participants at the fair, which featured band of Brazilians in that night. The disk can be accessed here. We were also invited by Club Brazil Radio Program, at 106.7 FM Milenium. The conversation with BM&A aired on September 17.

DJ Patrick Tor4, frim Bahia, Brasil, who attended the event for the first time, also sent his impressions about BAFIM: “the event is different than the others I’m used to like Brazil Music Fair, Popkomm (Berlin) and Womex. In those, there is a large flow of business people and is easy to lose opportunities. BAFIM works the other way and you need to understand it to operate contacts. It is possible to know all the participants in and out of Buenos Aires”.

We understand that BAFIM is in a reformulation process, after the changes in the last two years. The model that was presented – with a focus on MusicNet and shows inside the venues, very similar to the structure of the Canadian Music Week fair – is quite interesting. However, the number of subscription has been further reduced and we expect the organization to maintain the work that has been making to expand the BAFIM in order to become a benchmark in Latin America. BM&A will work on it.
