Midem, 2013 in Cannes

14 February, 2013 | English, Exchange

“Times they are changing…”

Yes, It is true. Midem is much smaller than it was 5 or 10 years ago. The times of glitz and glamour and the endless parties have waned. However, Midem is not only the oldest event in the music industry – Midem was first held in 1966 – it is still the most important international meeting point of the music industry in the world!

What’s happened in the last years? In the past, Midem wasn’t just the place to do business, it was also a place to celebrate big bucks and also – where musicians’ earnings were burned. Inflated and without vision. But the bubble has burst.

Now, Midem is more local and down-to-earth. People who come to Cannes are really interested in business and are much more focused on making music than in years gone by.

The Brazilian stand, hosted by BM&A, was continuously well-attended and bustling. Many publishers, label representatives, distributors, journalists, artists’ managers and musicians were interested in the Brazilian music scene and the Brazilian market. The cause of the attraction: the long history of musical roots from Brazil, combined with the fast-growing Brazilian economy, the coming Football World Cup and Olympic Games. People have renewed confidence in the Brazilians.

More intense exchange of music and a developing music business between Brazil and the rest of the international market, could offer opportunities for all interested. Never before have we experienced more tailwind. Let’s run with it!

I hope to see you at Midem, 2014 in Cannes at the Brazilian stand. The only essentials are your music and your well-structured business idea. You can be sure to find many who are interested.

By the way: Midem is still a big party. A party with less show and more heart…

Midem 2013

24 January, 2013 | BM&A Actions, Exchange

The time has come! Between the 26th and 29th of January, the French city of Cannes will be home to one of the biggest and most traditional business conferences of the world: Midem 2013.

Focusing not only on the music business, but also open to discussions on internet, technology and communications, the conference gathers exhibitors from around 90 different countries, and more than 6 thousand attendees. Record labels, editors, shows, festivals, private digital companies and mobile technologies will all be represented at Cannes, aiming their efforts on closing deals, strengthening networks and meeting new talents.

Brazilian participation

Since 2003 BM&A has guaranteed the Brazilian attendance at the event. For the institution’s president, Jose Carlos Costa Netto, the conference is the most expressive one in its own segment, and has significantly helped to improve the Brazilian music business. “Midem has been a very important event in terms of spreading out the word on Brazilian music. Specially on the last decade, the event has been particularly important for gathering information on the market, and phonograms that have been produced by our independent scene – that has grown a lot during these past years”, he says.

During the 2013 edition of Midem, it is scheduled to happen at the conference, on Saturday, 26th, a series of meetings, one of them entitled “Meet the countries – Brazil”. During quick 5 minutes sittings, the attendees will have the opportunity to talk to representatives of the Brazilian music industry in person – names such as Luciana Pergorer, from ABMI; Fábio Pereira, from Veirano Advogados; Felipe Llerena, from Venture BR and Claudio Silberberg, from ST2 have confirmed their participation.

Also, John Telfer, from Basement Brazil, will participate on the scheduled “Meet the Publishers”. On Monday, 28th, Fábio Pereira, will be attending the “Meet the Lawyers” series of meetings. On the same day Deborah Sztajnberg, CEO of Debs Consultoria, will participate on the following panel: “Winning Strategies to Approach Brands & Agencies”.

At midemLab, segment dedicated to upcoming start-ups and the development of apps, our country will be represented by “o Queremos!”, project developed by journalist Bruno Natal, who will also be attending the event.

Honoring Brazil

Great expectations lean towards the 29th of January, when Midem organization will gather to announce the choice of country to be honored during the 2014 edition of the conference: Brazil! The announcement will be followed by a press conference with Costa Netto, president of BM&A, João Zílio, from Sesc/SP and Antônio Grassi, president of FUNARTE and delegate from Brazil’s official Culture Office. “The main reason of my attendance this year is, with no doubt, to straighten our paths towards conceiving midem/Brasil 2014”, says Costa Netto. Project manager David Mcloughlin and BME’s international PRs Dirk Schade e Robert Singerman will also be at Cannes, scheduling meetings and assisting companies who aim on making deals with Brazil.

Our music has already been honored by Midem, in 2003. And after this decade of gap between both editions, Costa Netto believes that our market has encountered new challenges. The biggest one being the transition to the digital era, specifically the internet, in a way that does not exclude authors, musicians, labels and editors from collecting legit payments. “This scene has been evolving gradually and Midem is, today, one of the main proponents of this discussion”, he explains.

News and features

For the next year, there are many news and features. To adapt to the natural evolution of the market, in 2012 the event will have technology companies and advertising agencies around traditional artists and music industry entrepreneurs.

From now on, the midemNet will happen simultaneously and will be distributed throughout the four-day event. There will be a special day, a Monday, which will be dedicated to “key lectures”, titled “Visionary Monday”.

At midem 2012, “Innovation Factory” will be launched. It’s a meeting and discovery space where the start-ups, the main actors in technology, the artists and recording companies can share their needs, projects and experiences in the music. The midemLab, an international contest open to innovative start-ups and application developers , will take place within the Innovation Factory, as occurred in 2011.

The change for the next year aims to expand the scope, to enable the participation of companies from all sectors. Regarding marketing, brands will have an even more sophisticated program in terms of content, with conferences and workshops, and interaction between artists, publishers and recording companies. The SyncDay, an exclusive day for synchronization, in 2012 will have a competition that will award the best
use of music in a marketing campaign.

The midemFestival is now open, not only to the music industry executives, but also to the public. Three-night lineup will be divided between international artists. The Fringe stage, launched at the latest fair’s edition, in 2012 has been renamed to midemOff and corresponds to a musical program live in the bars of Cannes.

Another important change is the place where the companies will be. At midem 2012, there are three areas exclusively for business making: Riviera, Lerins (booth, bar) and Level1 (conferences). The BM&A’s booth will be now at Lerins, on the 3rd floor of the pavilion.

BM&A promotional CDs generating business. Have you made your application?

14 April, 2011 | BM&A Actions

Since its creation in 2001, BM&A has launched promotional CDs that compile what’s new in independent music production in Brazil.

But more than a physical CD, a compilation entitled “The New Brazilian Music” is a gateway to brazilian music in the international market. Through the presence of BM&A and its collaborators in major trade fairs and conventions of music as the Womex (Denmark), South by Southwest (USA), APAP (USA), Liverpool Sound City (England), Baffin (Argentina), MIDEM (France ), the compilation moves through the hands of major labels, producers and contractors abroad to generate great business opportunities.

With partnering with companies of culture and music, the CD was chartered in London Music Week magazine in its issue that brought the release of 7,000 units (and a digital version to 17,000 subscribers) taking 18 names in the new Brazilian music to England in the month of January. That same month, the material circulated by the MIDEM 2011 held annually in Cannes, France.

Of the artists who participated on the CD, Thiago Phetit went to Argentina and the U.S. in March. Luísa Maita and Guizado are already mobilizing to concerts abroad this year. She will pass through France and Portugal in July, after a year of negotiation with agents in USA and Europe, and the international release of the Lero-Lero album through Cumbancha/Putumayo label. The trumpeter Guizado received an invitation to a jazz festival in Turkey.

That same month, “The New Brazilian Music” CDs also circulated by the fair MIDEM 2011, held annually in Cannes, France.

Led by artist (musician, producer and composer) Hamleto Stamato, the band is formed by Widor Santiago, Saxophone, Paulinho Trompete, trumpets, Augusto Mattoso, bass, and Erivelton Silva, drums.
