Jody Gillett tells about The Great Escape (UK)

17 May, 2011 | BM&A Actions

Jody Gillett, representing the BM&A in the UK, was at the The Great Escape festival, held in Brighton, England. From there, she sent us the text below.

For five years now The Great Escape has taken place annually in Brighton, on the UK south coast. It’s a town which punches above its weight in terms of diversity and the arts, and as such is a great location for the buzzing TGE which is focussed on the independent music scene and tags itself Britain’s answer to SXSW. Brasil Music Exchange has 3 bands playing this year selected by the programmers at The Great Escape. Delegates here include media, labels, agents and festivals that are looking out for new acts at the packed showcases. Daily speed meeting sessions are available but it’s really through individual targeted networking that most progress can be made. Uncut (one of the UK’s most influential music monthly magazines) selected Babe, Terror to play on their night, on a bill that included New York’s eclectic Gang Gang Dance. Babe, Terror’s solo show of spectral electronica created a supernatural vibe that drew the audience in. By the end of his set he was surrounded by a crowd watching his intense improvised performance.

On Friday, 13 May, we had all 3 bands playing at The Hope: Babe,Terror; Maria Gasolina and Black Drawing Chalks . You can’t escape Brazilian talent at this TGE!

About Jazzahead!, in Germany

11 May, 2011 | BM&A Actions

I went to Jazzahead! in Bremen for the first time. Jazzahead! is one of the most important music business events in Europe. I promoted the Brazilian initiative “Brazil Music Exchange”.

Under the brand of Brazil Music Exchange we had a small stand.

If you are interested in dealing with international companies or you would like to bring over any Jazz artists, then it could be the right place. You can meet publishers, label managers, media people or booking agencies from around the world. To get an impression you can find the list of exhibitors and international participators at Jazzahead! here:

The event was well-organized, concentrated on what people want and not too huge. The atmosphere was very friendly.

Head of the showcases was the Club “Schlachthof”, next to the exhibition ground. Hamilton de Holanda were playing on the Jazzahead! Opening Night. Everyone was talking about this showcase after and it’s not too much when I say it was a big success.

If you have any business ideas around Jazz music, clear targets and well prepared promotion, then you can go to Jazzahead! in 2012 in Bremen. www.jazzahead.de

The Great Escape opens the festival season in England

09 May, 2011 | BM&A Actions

The Great Escape, which takes place in May, is a festival that has established itself internationally as a leading event for new bands and has several partnerships in independent markets, including the BM&A. Since its debut in 2006, The Great Escape offers a panorama of the new musical production of England and other countries. The line up consists principally of electronic and indie alternative attractions such as English Bat for Lashes, who attended the first editio; Kasabian, who figured in 2009 and the Brazilians of CSS who played in 2007.

There’ll be around 300 attractions performing in 30 locations. Everything happens in Brighton for three days. The 2011 edition goes from 12 to 14 May. But the city remains in the party for over a week, after all, parallel to the event, there are numerous club nights, label parties, industry showcases, and even street gigs.

This year the festival waits for about 15 thousand people. Among them, three representatives from Brazil: Babe, Terror (SP); Black Drawing Chalks (GO) and Marina Gasolina (PR). The latter is the project of funk Marina Ribatski, who lives in London since he left the band Bonde do Role in 2007. Babe, Terror (producer Claudio) had its lo-fi psychedelia released in Europe by the Phantasy label owned by the British DJ and producer Erol Alkan. And the rock quartet from Goiânia prepares for its debut in Europe.

Representing the BM&A in The Great Escape festival, will be David McLoughlin and the RP English Jody Gillet. They’ll be in touch with the local market by publicizing the CDs released by BM&A and she’ll bring the news that soon will be posted here.

Music Exchange – The New Musical Currency?

06 May, 2011 | Exchange

Music from Brazil is like a trade mark in the international music scene. People like the unique musical waves from Brazil. People in Berlin, Barcelona or New York love to celebrate Brazilian music.

On the other hand many interesting artists from around the world would like to perform in Brazil. Brazil has many festivals, halls and live clubs. The country is well connected with the other South American countries.

But its always the same problem: For Brazilians its too expensive to have some concerts and showcases in Europe or North America and to get the money for flights and accommodations. For European agencies it’s a high financial risk to bring over new interesting names from Brazil and to start a partnership, and vice versa.

One way to share the interests and risks could be to exchange the artists and projects. For example: When the metal act from Berlin would like to play in Brazil then the Brazilian booking agency can take the band from Berlin as tour support through Brazil. Then a Brazilian metal act from the agency could play as support in Germany. Like a modern barter deal. The Brazilians arrange and pay for the organisation, transport, promotion and hotel while touring in Brazil. The German partners do the same for the Brazilians in Germany. Both sides can use the structures and connections of each other. Its much cheaper and with a real value.

Another example could be a special exchange program between festivals. Brazilian Jazz Festivals can sign the best upcoming act and exchange the act with another Festival in Europe. They can create a kind of contest in cooperation with a sponsorship.

What I will say: We have to find new ways and sometimes the opportunities and interests are closer than we think. Are you ready? Then let’s produce your English EPK and let’s create your promotion material. Let’s go to create new partnerships.
